News & Alerting Services

The Department of Health subscribes to a Media Portal news alerting service for all of Health.  This service reproduces copy from Australian newspapers (including the West Australian) on health issues. Updated daily.

Behind the Headlines (NHS)
Behind the headlines provides an unbiased and evidence-based analysis of health stories that make the news. The service is intended for both the public and health professionals.

Health News (ABC)

Hitting the Headlines Archive (NHS)
The National Library for Health’s Hitting the Headlines service ended on 31st March 2008 and provision of the searchable archive will be reviewed after 6 months. This news service was produced for the NHS by the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination at the University of York and offered an analysis of the evidence behind selected health stories reported in national newspapers. Summaries of news stories were posted within 48 hours of newspaper publication to ensure that health professionals and the public were better informed about the accuracy of reporting of research in the press.

Media Doctor (Australia)
"Media Doctor is a website dedicated to improving the accuracy of media reports about new medical treatments. Media Doctor reviews current news items about medical treatments, assesses their quality using a standardised rating scale and presents reviews of good and bad examples of reports on this website. It is anticipated that these independent and objective critiques will improve journalistic practices in reporting new medications and treatments in Australia."

Media Doctor (Canada)
The Canadian site has the same objectives as the Australian site.

Health News Review
"HealthNewsReview.org is an attempt to help improve the accuracy, balance and completeness of news stories that make claims about new ideas in health care."

Journal Watch (Department of Primary Health Care, University of Oxford)
"Journal Watch is written by Dr Richard Lehman and is a lighthearted review of the leading medical journals from a GP perspective. It is updated weekly."
